Call it Quits on New Year's Resolutions and do this Instead

I can be the first to admit that every year when the clocks strikes midnight on new years eve, I am reflecting and envisioning all of the ways I can embrace the new year to break bad habits and become the best version of myself. With the start of a new calendar year and a pretty new planner to boot, I am filled with motivation and drive to achieve my new goals. I know I am not alone when I have seen a new year's resolution fizzle out by February and because of this around 2016-2017 I began a new and different practice that allows me to embrace the eb and flow of motivation, time and focus throughout the year.

This year, I implore you to do the same and quit  your resolutions and instead focus on a word of the year.

A simpler, more focused way to set the tone for the year ahead with profound impact? Yes, please!

Choosing a single word can help guide and shape intention for the year ahead, as it becomes your touchstone, a constant reminder of your values. It’s not about perfection or rigid adherence to a plan, but about embodying the essence of your chosen word in your daily life.

Resolutions often cause us to quantify our goals/experience instead of centering more on an intention that can show up in various aspects of life. For example, if you choose "growth," your focus might shift to embracing new challenges, seeking personal development opportunities, and nurturing your relationships. "Joy" could lead you to find happiness in small moments, cultivate positivity, and prioritize self-care. Whatever your word is, the beauty of this practice lies in its flexibility and personal relevance. Your word becomes a beacon, gently steering you towards your aspirations without the pressure of an all-or-nothing resolution.

So, as you bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one, consider simplifying your approach. Pick a word that resonates with you, let it inspire your actions, and watch how it can transform your year in subtle, meaningful ways.

Below is a list of some of my favorite words – use as a source for inspiration or feel free to choose one that resonates with you. Once you’ve chosen, make sure you write it down EVERYWHERE  (including that new planner of yours) so you can see it and reflect on it daily.
